Paver Driveway Installation: What to Expect from Start to Finish

A paver driveway installation is a multi-step process that — when done correctly — produces a beautiful, long-lasting result. Here's exactly what a professional installation looks like from start to finish.

Step 1: Excavation and Sub-Base Preparation

The existing surface is removed and the ground is excavated to the proper depth — typically 10–12 inches below finished grade for a driveway. A compacted aggregate base (usually 6–8 inches of crushed stone or limerock) is installed and compacted in lifts. This base is critical — it's what prevents pavers from settling and shifting over time.

Step 2: Edge Restraints

Before any pavers go down, edge restraints are installed around the perimeter. These plastic or concrete borders keep the pavers from spreading laterally over time.

Step 3: Bedding Sand Layer

A 1-inch layer of coarse bedding sand is screeded smooth over the compacted base. This layer allows fine-tuning of the surface level and provides a bed for the pavers to settle into.

Step 4: Paver Installation

Pavers are laid by hand in the chosen pattern. Field pavers go first, border pavers last. Pavers are cut as needed along edges with a wet saw.

Step 5: Compaction and Polymeric Sand

A plate compactor runs over the entire surface, locking the pavers into the sand bed. Polymeric sand is then swept into the joints and activated with water — it hardens into a firm, weed-resistant jointing material.

How Long Does It Take?

Most standard residential paver driveways take 1–3 days depending on size. The surface is usable the same day installation is complete.
