How to Clean a Concrete Driveway in Florida

By Ocoee Concrete  |  Central Florida Concrete & Paver Experts

Florida's humidity and warmth make concrete driveways magnets for algae, mildew, and green biological growth — especially in shaded areas. A clean driveway doesn't just look better; it also lasts longer. Here's how to keep yours clean.

Routine Cleaning: Pressure Washing

Annual pressure washing with a 2,500–3,000 PSI pressure washer handles most concrete driveway cleaning. Hold the wand at a consistent angle and work in overlapping passes. Use a fan tip (25–40 degree), not a zero-degree tip that can etch the surface.

Removing Algae and Green Growth

Florida's shaded concrete areas often develop green or black algae growth. Mix 1 part household bleach with 1 part water, apply to the affected area, let it sit for 10–15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff bristle brush and rinse thoroughly. For heavier growth, commercial concrete cleaners like Simple Green Concrete Cleaner work well.

Removing Oil Stains

Fresh oil: Apply kitty litter or absorbent material, let sit, sweep away. Then apply a degreaser and scrub. Old, set oil stains require a commercial concrete degreaser and sometimes multiple treatments. Deep oil stains that have penetrated fully may not come out completely.

When to Seal After Cleaning

After a thorough cleaning, allow the concrete to dry completely (24–48 hours minimum) before applying sealer. This is the ideal time to reseal — the clean, dry surface accepts sealer most effectively and extends the protection.
